Directions

The most popular route heads out of San Jose along the Inter American Highway to the town of Cartago, where you head into the hills and cloud forests of the Cerro de la Muerte -Mountain Pass of Death-, coming out of the Cerro de la Muerte you will pass through the cities of San Isidro and Palmar Norte on your way to Golfito. Once in Golfito, actually just before you reach Golfito proper, you will turn off onto the dirt roads that head towards Pavones and Playa Zancudo. After 10 kilometers you will have to take a small car ferry crossing over the Coto River. Continue on, following the signs to Pavones. Once you reach the small village and surfing mecca of Pavones its another 6 kilometers to Tiskita. Go to see the Road to Tiskita.An alternative route takes the Costanera Sur, a well-graded and soon to be paved coastal highway. You can pick up the Costanera Sur by either heading out of San Jose towards the beaches of Jaco and Manuel Antonio and continuing on south, or by turning towards the ocean and the beach town of Dominical at San Isidro. Once you reach Ciudad Cortes you will continue on to Plamar Norte, joining up with the Inter American Highway, and then follow the directions above. This route will take a little bit longer, but is considered by many to be one of the more scenic drives in Costa Rica, particularly the stretch from Dominical to Ciudad Cortes.A four wheel drive vehicle is necessary in the rainy season, and high clearance is always useful. Due to extreme weather and heavy rains, road conditions can change rapidly in Costa Rica and the road to Pavones and Tiskita is occasionally closed. It is always best to call the lodge to find out current conditions and what route is best for you.
