The surrounding lake is more than just beautiful, it consistantly yields the largest number of trophy sized rainbow trout in the southern hemisphere. The Rotorua thermal region, with its land of bubbling mud pools, steaming hot springs and geysers continue to be a focal point for the active Maori culture. Te Wairoa, the Maori village, which was buried by the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886 is an important archeological centre for the area.
