The name Nevis is derived from the Spanish word nieve which means snow. Christopher Columbus gave the name to the island when he discovered it in 1492, due to the clouds on top of the mountain that he could see as he approached. In fact, the government does not allow buildings taller than two storeys, so that they will not be higher than the canopy cover of the palm trees.
