The Anchorage Motel occupies the large in-town lot that once contained the famous St. Sauveur Hotel. Built in 1870 by John Clark and owned by Fred A Alley, it was consumed by fire in 1881 only to be rebuilt the following year. A contemporary guide book says the St. Sauveur enjoyed the patronage of a very smart set of guests. Its location on Mount Desert Street, Bar Harbor s most popular boulevard gave it distinction.
